ASLEF and RMT Train Strikes and engineering works: What you need to know
In this article, We have covered everything that you need to know about travelling with Southern in the month of July 2023, due to engineering maintenance and train strikes.
As a result of the ASLEF union’s worldwide restriction on overtime, there will be a number of timetables and service adjustments from 17 July 2023, Monday to 22 July 2023, Saturday.
The RMT union is also planning countrywide strike action on Thursday, July 20, Saturday, July 22, and Saturday, July 29, which will Thameslink services.
Separate industrial action is taking place on the London Underground between Sunday, July 23 and Friday, July 28 for those commuting by tube.
Customers are advised to plan ahead and double-check their routes before traveling between July 17 and July 30 due to scheduled industrial action.
During these days, stations are expected to be busier, with some passengers perhaps having to queue or not being able to board a train at all.
Additional scheduled engineering works will also impact some Southern trains in and out of London on July 15, July 16, and from July 17 to July 21.

July 17, Monday – July 19, Wednesday
Due to industrial action, there will be a modified travel plan between these days.
Customers using Thameslink should leave additional time for their journey and expect busier stations and trains, with some likely to wait during peak periods.
Due to engineering work between Balham and Selhurst blocking certain lines, there will also be an altered late night and early morning service to and from London Victoria.
July 20, Wednesday
Services will begin later and end sooner than usual, with certain stations not served due to industrial action.
Travellers need to verify and plan ahead of time before travelling.
July 21, Friday
Due to engineering works between Balham and Selhurst, there will be an altered late-night and early-morning service to and from London Victoria.
Trains to and from London Victoria will operate on a reduced timetable from 11:45 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. owing to planned engineering works.
The 12:01 a.m. train from London Bridge to Selhurst will divert at Crystal Palace and end at Norwood Junction.
July 22, Saturday
Certain routes in Sussex and Kent will see a timetable change.
July 23, Sunday
Services are likely to begin later than usual, however Southern has guaranteed that the timetable will return to normal on Sunday.
July 29, Saturday – July 30, Sunday
Certain lines in Sussex and Kent will have their timetables changed.
