Australia Cancels Commonwealth Games 2026
The Commonwealth Games 2026 may not take place after Victoria withdrew as host, stating that it was unwilling to pay up to $7 billion on “a 12-day sporting event.”
In an announcement described as “hugely disappointing” by the Commonwealth Games Federation, Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews showed the cost of organising the event had risen from an earlier estimate of $2.6 billion.
Andrews said that the funds will be redirected to regional housing and sporting projects.
Andrews declared that the Commonwealth Games 2026 will not take place in Victoria.
“We have informed Commonwealth Games authorities of our decision to seek contract termination and… not host the games.”
The CGF criticised the Victorian premier’s rationale, claiming that the statement was made with barely eight hours’ notice.
Andrews announced the decision on Tuesday after cost estimates reached $7 billion.
Andrews said on Tuesday that the government considered shifting the Games to the state capital of Melbourne, but that it would have cost more than $4 billion.
He stated that the monies set up for the Games will instead be used to construct permanent sporting facilities.
Athletes Reaction To Commonwealth Games 2026 Cancellation
On social media, athelets have expresssed shock and disappointment.
Rowan Crothers, who represented Australia at the Paralympics in 2016 and 2020, said the cancellation would be very sad for competitors.
“The Commonwealth Games is the largest major international competition that includes athletes with disabilities alongside athletes who are able-bodied”.
Jemima Montag, a race walker, told ABC Radio she was “deflated” after hearing the news.
Some Infrastructural Projects will be carried out
Although Victoria will no longer host the games, some infrastructural projects will continue.
More than 1,300 new social and affordable housing houses will be built across regional Victoria. And $150 million will be invested on tourism and events.
Regional athletic facility enhancements are also on the agenda.
“The Commonwealth Games 2026 cancellation is extremely damaging to Victoria’s reputation as a global event leader.”
