Rex Heuermann Charged in Gilgo Beach Murders
A New York architect was charged in the Gilgo Beach murders, a series of killings of mostly young women, more than a decade after 11 corpses were discovered on Long Island and a year after he was identified as a potential suspect.
“Rex Heuermann is a demon among us, a predator who has ruined families,” Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison said Friday after the defendant pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder.
Rex Heuermann was charged on Friday with the deaths of three women, Amber Lynn Costello, Megan Waterman, and Melissa Barthelemy, whose bodies were discovered near Gilgo Beach on Long Island over a decade ago. According to court documents, he is also the primary suspect in the death of Maureen Brainard-Barnes.
After a sex worker went missing in 2010, the horrible findings were uncovered. Officials uncovered the remains of 11 additional persons while searching for that woman.
Tierney said Heuermann became known to a Gilgo Beach task group in March 2022. Following that, a secret grand jury was used to obtain over 300 subpoenas and search warrants.
Gilgo Four
The women’s bones, dubbed the “Gilgo Four,” were discovered in December 2010 near Gilgo Beach on Long Island’s South Shore.
Tierney said the victims had one thing in common: they were both small sex workers.
Tierney further stated that the crime scenes shared similarities, pointing out that the victims were bound at the head, waist and legs with camouflage hessian.
Heuermann spoke with his victims using burner phones, which he discarded immediately after killing them, according to Tierney.
Tierney said the burner phones were linked to Massapequa, putting the phone’s owner in the region at the time of the slayings.
Investigators claimed Heuermann, who resides in Massapequa Park, was also linked to the crimes through found hair.
Prosecutors stated in the bail application that hair from a female was found on or near three of the victims. It was eventually confirmed to belong to Heuermann’s wife, who was out of the state at the time the three ladies vanished, according to the report.
Court Appearance
Rex Heurmann burst into tears in a Long Island courtroom on Friday.
He was formally informed of the murder allegations filed against him while dressed in casual work clothing.
Michael Brown, the defence attorney, stated that he had only recently met with his client.
In April 2011, authorities discovered three more sets of remains: Valerie Mack, 24, a female child, and a guy. Mack was not discovered until 2020.
Two other deaths were discovered in neighbouring Nassau County, where Heuermann resides, adding to the terrible finds.
